Gifts of Securities

A gift of publicly traded securities “in kind” provides you with an unexpected means to make a significant contribution to Conservatory Canada at a relatively low cost . Recent changes by the Federal Government to the tax on gifts of securities means that by making a gift of equities, bonds and mutual funds to Conservatory Canada, your taxable capital gain is eliminated.

Conservatory Canada will issue a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the gift of securities to be used for tax purposes. This value will be the closing price of the securities on the date they are received. Often this is much lower than the original purchase price of the securities you are donating.

You can give the gift of securities either during your lifetime or through your estate and receive the same benefit from a tax point of view.

You are able to carry forward any donation amount that exceeds your eligible annual tax credit limit for a period of 5 years.
