New Piano Pedagogy Exam

We have changed the format of our Piano Pedagogy exam to comprise a series of research questions based on our new recommended text, “Professional Piano Teaching,” by Jeanine M. Jacobson, published by Alfred.

We wanted to create a more meaningful approach, with more guidance offered on what to study and research for our Pedagogy exam, which is co-requisite with our ACCM (Teacher’s).

The new text is a comprehensive, modern resource for both new and experienced studio teachers, and is very popular with American Universities. It is published in two volumes, both of which are required for studying and completing the work required for our Pedagogy exam.

A question or exercise is posed for most chapters in each volume for which students will research and write answers. Students submit their research answers when completed for assessment, after which further revision and explanation may be asked for. Upon successful completion of the research component, an online interview consisting of questions and discussion with one of our Piano Pedagogy examiners will be scheduled to verify the work completed.

This now takes the place of our old requiements for the former Pedagogy paper from our 1999 Theory syllabus.

An outline of topics with sample questions can be found on our Diploma syllabus page.
